Thirteen players finish in extreme weather conditions
Saturday produced some of the worst weather ever experienced on the golf course, but did not deter forty one hardy souls from setting out in competition despite the elements. However, the majority of the field saw fit to drop out at various points around the course leaving just 13 players to finish. The best score of the day was compiled by Graeme Robertson in the B grade division with a net of 74 on his handicap of 17. A mighty fine effort considering the conditions.

Port Fairy's aesthetics rate thirteenth best in Australia
The Golf Course Guide for 2008 has rated Port Fairy in the top 50 Public Access courses in Australia. The publication that claims to be Australia's "golfing Bible" describes and lists some 650 courses that offer access to green fee players.
As well as the overall 'best list' the publication also rates courses under 'best design', 'best condition' and 'best aesthetics'. In the aesthetics category Port Fairy was rated at number 13 in Australia. This is quite an achievement for our club and thanks go to the staff and members who work hard to keep the course in such good condition.

GOLFERS UPSTAGE THE PRO.
Last Thursday Port Fairy's women golfers held their annual stableford "Beat the Pro" competition and guess what? - most of them did!

Of the 36 women who participated 22 managed a better stableford score than the club's professional, Paul Smith.
However it should be mentioned that Paul has held clinics for the women on two occasions during the past week - he is clearly an excellent teacher! - perhaps nwe should say the proof is in the putting.
The best player in the field was kate Stuchbery with 41 stableford points off a handicap of 25.
Only a month ago Kate's handicap was 28 and it will now come down another point or two. Definitely an improving golfer. Congratulations and well done Kate.

THE NEW BAR
The club's refurbished bar is now up and running and is much brighter and roomier.
Heartfelt thanks to all people who contributed their time and effort to get the job done in such a short time.
GREAT SCORING ON SATURDAY
Whether it was the new bar or the fine weather we will never know, but something inspired a number of golfers to play extremely well on Saturday.
Andrew Dwyer, Matt mcCarthy and Marlene Hoy all had 42 points to win their divisions.
Alas, not all fared so well. John O'Sullivan also scored 42 points but was relegated to the C grade runner-up position on count back.
Rex Grady, Leo Carey and Helen bacon also managed 40 points or better only to suffer the same fate.
Sometimes as any golfer will tell you, the game just isn't fair.
All members are encouraged to continue supporting the club by making the most of the new bar facility, in moderation of course.
After all if 42 points only gets you second place your enjoyment of the day will have to be provided by sympathetic partners and a long, cool drink.
