NEWS FOR MARCH 2008
Mike Clayton visit to Port Fairy Golf Club 1 - 2 March 2008
As a former touring professional' and now one of Australia's leading course designers' Mike Clayton has seen and played many of the worlds leading golf courses' however there is still something that keeps him coming back to the links at Port Fairy. Mike was in town over the weekend and took the time to have a social round at the course to see how it's progressing.
Mike knew of PFGC from his time playing the Victorian PGA tournament at Warrnambool on several occasions back in the early 80's however his first look at the course as a golfer wasn't until about 7 years ago. He and his firm Michael Clayton Golf Design' subsequently became involved on a professional level with their role as course design consultants. During this time the course has seen changes ranging from the subtle removal of trees and additional bunkering on some holes through to the more dramatic repositioning of the 15th tee.
Photo: Mike Clayton putting out on 9th green at Port Fairy
During his association with PFGC it is not only the golf course itself that Mike has been impressed with "One of the biggest dangers for a golf club is a complacent membership' however here at PFGC the members have been very progressive and keen to see the course improve and evolve whilst at the same time retaining its essential character" Mike said. As for the future' Mike can see perhaps some areas of subtle change' however as he puts it "the course is pretty good as it is - particularly the stretch from holes 12-16 with their magnificent ocean views"
Mike rates Port Fairy and Horsham as the best regional courses in the state and makes the point that many of Australia's leading players have come out of non-metropolitan areas.
Another big plus for PFGC according to Mike is the affordability factor "I like courses that don't get too carried away with themselves and PFGC is a fun and affordable course that is a great asset to not only the town of Port Fairy but to the whole district."
Mike also acknowledges the community benefit provided by the golf club as an avenue for bringing people of all ages together. PFGC current membership includes players of all ages from those in their 80's right down to a very strong group of younger golfers. He would like to see golf promoted further within the school system and is pleased to see the new junior development programme headed by professional Paul Smith' as Mike puts it "The earlier you can take up the game the better off you are - the longer you leave it the harder it becomes"
Mike's company was part of the design team for one of Australian golf's recent success stories' Barnbougle Dunes in north east Tasmania. Barnbougle shares very similar geography to PFGC' being located on a beautiful bay just outside a small regional town. One difference however is that Barnbougle was built on private land which allowed closer access to the beach and dunes. Mike and his colleagues are currently working on design changes to The Lakes in Sydney and also with a major redevelopment of the Healesville club in Victoria.
With the years first major at Augusta looming Mike regards Geoff Ogilvy and Adam Scott as the best chances amongst the Australians. "Geoff has proven he can do it with his US Open win and was right in the mix at Augusta last year and Adam Scott as the leading ranked Australian is due to break through" Mike said. "Unfortunately for these two or anyone else to win they need to not only be on top of their own games but also to hope that Tiger Woods is not at the top of his - an event that is all too rare at the moment. It's ironic that they said 10 or so years ago that the Tour had such depth of talent that no one player would ever dominate golf and now with Tiger we're seeing probably the most dominant player of all time"
As for his own game Mike plays 5 weeks or so on the European Seniors Tour each year not only to keep the competitive juices flowing ' but also to take a look at the various courses from the design perspective and to catch up with many old friends from his 15 years as a touring pro in Europe.
Mike hopes to continue his ongoing involvement on both a personal and professional basis - "With its renowned hospitality Port Fairy is a great destination in itself and to have a golf course of this quality is such a wonderful asset for the whole region" he said. As for Port Fairy Golf Club it is an enormous advantage to have someone of the stature of Mike Clayton as a passionate advocate for the club.
Unfortunately for Mike he doesn't get down to Port Fairy as often as he would like although some of his colleagues are more frequent visitors. "Even though the relationship is on a business basis it certainly isn't a chore for any of the staff to come down here" Mike said.

As for Port Fairy Golf Club it is an enormous advantage to have someone of the stature of Mike Clayton as a passionate advocate for the club.
Mike Clayton played the Australian tour from 1981 until the present' and the European tour from 1982 to 1996. He won the Australian amateur tournament in 1978' and his tournament wins as a professional included the Australian Match Play in 1992' and the Coolum Classic and the Heineken Classic' both in 1994.
Mike Clayton is vice-president of the Golf Society of Australia' and is a director of Michael Clayton Golf Design' a golf-course design company. He writes about golf for several publications' including The Age and Golf Australia magazine.
